Its fantastic to meet new people having same interests and share experience. This how to helps you to get into a Swiss hockey stadium that actually is close to Switzerlands biggest airport (Zurich Airport (ZRH)) and that is very easy to reach.

Swiss Top Club

ZSC Lions Zurich is a Swiss top club playing in the top Swiss National League and frequently in the Champions Hockey League. It’s easy to get to their stadium called Swiss Life Arena. The atmosphere is amazing and it’s actually unbelievable how enthusiastic the Zurich fans are! Other then in the NHL where the atmosphere and mood in the stadium often is driven by the entertainment systems, you will find in Zurich the fans singing long and specified fan songs whilst keeping the atmosphere unbelievable loud! The fans do this on top of the entertainment systems that is similar as you are used to in the National Hockey League!

All in a nutshell: If you are a hockey fan and if you are traveling Europe, its a pity if you do not watch Swiss Hockey!

Watch Swiss Hockey

It’s actually more easy to watch Swiss hockey as you would think. You need to know and do 3 things:

  1. Plan your Europe / Switzerland trip accordingly
  2. Get a ticket for entering the stadium upfront and before you travel (online)
  3. Have a good idea on how you get to the Swiss Life Arena, the home of ZSC Lions in Zurich

1. Plan your Europe / Switzerland trip

It is actually very easy to get to the ZSC Lions Zurich home (called Swiss Life Arena). Overall a very short journey from the biggest Swiss airport, called Zurich Airport (ZRH) brings you to the stadium. You find an even shorter journey from the biggest Swiss train station, called Zurich HB. Finally, it’s easy to reach by car because the stadium is next to a motorway. There are options and all are easy:

  • Take the plane and public transport
  • Take the public transport
  • Drive by car

By aircraft

You simply extend your trip by one stop in Zurich. You like to stay overnight to have enough time to enjoy the game and possibly have a few drinks afterwards. The Zurich fans typically stay after the game at the stadium site to have a few drinks. Zurich Airport is well connected to the United States and Canada, but also within Europe. You like to consider that the strongest Alliance is Star Alliance of which United and Air Canada are member. Oversee trips from the US or Canada typically allow you to extend the trip within Europe by good offers for an additional stop. You like to try different websites to find a great offer.

Get From The Airport To The home of Zurich

The home or Zurich called Swiss Life Arena, in which ZSC Lions play, is depending on direct or indirect connection only a 25- 35 min train ride. Zurich Airport’s train station is directly integrated into the airport and easy for you to reach. You simply select a train connection from Zurich Flughafen to Zurich Altstetten. I am sure, you will find it easy to type this into the train ticket machines that are located in the airport and that are available in English language. Only a few steps are required and you have your ticket.

Depending on where your hotel is I suggest to book a day ticket. You most likely like to select a day ticket which allows you full flexibility for the time after the game. Also, you maybe love to explore for example the city of Zurich or stay with the fans at the stadium and have a few drinks. You need to know that Zurich Altstetten is the closed train station to the stadium.

By train

If you travel by train, for example from another big city in Europe (Paris, Frankfurt, Milan, Rome, London, Munich, Brussels, and many others), than you will find good connections to Zurich Main Station (called Zurich HB). From Zurich main station its only a 10 minutes train ride. Select the connection Zurich HB to Zurich Altstetten.

Switzerland has by the way one of the world’s best train system. It’s very reliable, resilient and trains are always in time.

Schedules can be found at the national train website and are easy to book online. You also can buy tickets at the train stations. Its easy.

By car

This might be the most difficult one. Even though the motorway is next to the Swiss Life arena in which ZSC Lions play, there are not a lot parking options. It’s actually unbelievable how bad this was planned. They actually did build a brand new stadium without a good enough option to park cars. You can buy parking tickets on the ZSC Lions website, but it is expensive. Better to take the train (see above) and put the car somewhere else.

2. Get Tickets

This is not difficult, however, if you like to have amazing seats, then you should plan and buy tickets as many days as possible before the game day. Depending on who plays at ZSC Lions and whether its playoff time, games actually can be sold out within minutes.

Note:

Buy tickets on the official ticket webshop via the official website only.

in Switzerland they put for whatever reason the team playing at home first! Therefore:

  • ZSC Lions – HC Lugano (-> Zurich plays at home in the Swiss Life arena)
  • HC Lugano – ZSC Lions (-> Zurich plays in Lugano, that is far away from Zurich)

3. Have a good idea on how you get to the Stadium of ZSC Lions in Zurich (Swiss Life Arena)

As written in the above already, the best way for you is to get there by train. Something you potentially love is that in Zurich you are allowed to have alcoholic drinks in the train. Therefore, don’t be surprised if you see many Zurich fans having beer or other alcoholic drinks in their hands when they travel to the stadium. You maybe like to join them – it’s allowed!

You simply search for a connection to Zurich Altstetten. This area is very well connected and from the hot spots in Zurich and ts taking you 10 minutes to get there. The trains run very frequently and you will find multiple connections per hour. If you travel by train and if you are already in Zurich, than you simply have not to worry. Alternatively, if you already in the city of Zurich, than you also could take the streetcar or how they call it “Tram” or the bus. Simply take the direction to Zurich Altstetten.

You will see in Zurich Altstetten many fans starting from 90 minutes before the game starts. You simply follow them and find its a short walk. Furthermore, you will find plenty of fast food and drinks that make the short walk to the stadium already an experience. You will enjoy this!
